Who can participate? Any child from birth to 8 years of age accompanied by a legal guardian can participate in a study (provided that a study for that age group is being conducted when you visit the CSTM). How many times does my child have to participate? Our studies require one visit; however, depending on your interest, you are more than welcome to participate in any of our ongoing studies at the Living Lab during future visits to the museum or in any of our ongoing studies at the University of Ottawa.
How long does participation take? Each study lasts approximately 10 to15 minutes with an additional 5-10 minutes for the necessary paperwork such as a consent form and a sociodemographic questionnaire.
What types of activities will my child participate in? Our studies are short game-like activities that are interactive and involve toys or watching images and videos on a computer. The specific study in which your child will participate in will mostly depend on your child’s age.
When can my child participate in a study? The Living Lab is open Fridays 12-5PM, Saturday and Sunday 10AM to 3PM, and by appointment. Children participate in our studies on a first come, first serve basis. However, if you would like to schedule a specific time for your child to participate, please don’t hesitate to email us at [email protected].
Can I bring my other children to the lab? Yes! We have a well-stocked play area with books and toys.
Will I learn about my child’s development compared to other children? Our research is focused on the general tendencies of children as a group, and all the data we collect is combined into a large pool, so we do not calculate individual performances. We can direct you to the appropriate resources if you would like a professional clinical evaluation.
If you have any questions not covered here, or if you would like further details about any aspect of our research, please email us at [email protected] or call us at (613) 235-7053, ext. 2107.
